Every eligible veteran is entitled to military funeral honors at no cost to the family. At a minimum, honors include the folding and presentation of the United States flag to the next of kin and the sounding of Taps by at least two uniformed service members. Families do not arrange this alone — the funeral director requests honors on your behalf, and American Legion Post 200 supports honors for veterans in and around Wallis.
What to Do First
- Tell the funeral director that the deceased was a veteran. They begin the request.
- Provide the DD-214 or other discharge documentation if you have it.
- Say whether you would like Post 200 to take part, and we will coordinate with the funeral home.
- Ask the funeral director about a burial flag and, if relevant, a government headstone or marker.
If you cannot find the DD-214, do not delay the arrangements. Tell the funeral director and call Post 200 at (979) 478-9913 — records can often be located quickly for funeral purposes.
How Post 200 Helps
Our members render honors for veterans across Austin, Fort Bend, Waller, and Wharton counties. We also sit with families afterwards to explain survivor benefits, because the paperwork that follows a death is its own burden and no family should face it without someone who has seen it before.
